17 y/o Nerd from Egypt

Hi, I’m Yassin Bassem, an 17 y/o student at STEM Gharbia, a top Egyptian public high school. I am planning to publish videos on YouTube (starting April 8, my birthday)

Regarding academics, I am interested in Biology (esp. Anatomy), Computer Science (esp. C++ is my favorite), and philosophy (esp. ethics).

In my leisure time, I enjoy reading DC comics, understanding data I find in the wild, swimming, designing social media posts for companies, playing chess, and overly-analyzing what I put in this About section.

STEM Gharbia Student

High school is exciting. I currently co-lead three school clubs (IYNA Gharbiya Chapter, Gharbia biology club, and STEM Gharbiya mun).

I started some iniatitives like Rise Above Autism and Meilleurs (A leading STEM study community in Egypt). Finally, I co-founded a chess club for fun.

Education

I believe we should work towards providing the global human right of free, high-quality education for every child. I also believe that all knowledge should be free, and that increasing its quantity, improving its quality, and making it accessible are among the most noble actions.

Privacy

We live in an age where our every move is invasively documented without consent. From social media and internet browsing to private communication and daily habits, our human right to privacy is being violated to unimaginable degrees. As the saying goes, “Don’t be evil.”

Democracy

Nearly 70% of all humans live under autocracies or pseudo-democracies. Most of us do not have real control over our lives. Who deserves more say over how a nation operates than its citizens? Plus, no one person can beat collaboration in reaching effective solutions and policies.

Effective Altruism

Do you know about altruism, the practice of helping others? Now let’s make it effective! I believe we should focus on fixing the world’s most pressing issues (e.g., climate change) and pursue the highest possible impact per time, effort, and money throughout our lives.
